高齢者の便秘に関する最大の問題は体をあまり動かさないことと、たくさんの薬を服用していることです。便秘の治療は若い人と同じですが、ライフスタイルと食事の改善を重視します。体を動かさないことに対しては、膨張性下剤の代わりに刺激性下剤を使用して補います。センナと食物繊維がともに含まれる下剤は効果的です。できれば便秘を引き起こす薬物の服用を止める必要があります。

注意が必要な高齢者の便秘

• 便に血が混じる。（便検査で潜血が見られる場合も含まれる。）
• 鉄欠乏製貧血である。
• 体重が減少している。
• いままで問題なかったのに、最近になって便秘が起こっている。
• 直腸が脱出している。
• 便の太さが変化している。
• 腸の狭窄を疑わせる症状がある。
